Legion, SAL, Aux friends: Baseball season is in full swing and the weather is getting better. Our friend Mark Rogel at the Mets has gotten us approval for an American Legion outing and event on Sunday Sept. 16th 2007 when the Mets will play the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium. Have to expect the game will be near a sellout. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the building of the Vietnam Wall in Washington so I thought this would an appropriate theme for our event with the Mets this year. Our friends with the Mets have been very supportive of the events the past three years when we have honored Flag Day, WWII veterans, and they invited us to participate in their major 9-11 ceremony last fall. They just ask us to make a strong effort to attract a large group. Last year the general guidance was that each county group which sold 100 tickets could present a color guard. Pictures from the three past events are available on: I’d like to develop a committee for the event across the area with representatives working in each county area. We should also reach out to the many Vietnam veterans associations that we could imagine to be interested in this type of event. Can you let me know if you can participate on the committee? I’d like to have comments on seating. It would of course be nice if we can do something to host Vietnam veterans that day we are in someway disabled. For the American Legion I believe that public events like this are valuable because of the visibility created and the opportunity to conduct an event on a regional basis. We have really made a lot of friends through the past three outings. Perhaps in May or June we can have a meeting on this at one of the Queens Posts and in Westchester. There really is a lot we can do to honor our Vietnam veterans and create an enjoyable day for all. |
